Yoga & Meditation
Most would expect this post to begin with words describing my love for yoga and meditation, how I have mastered these skills over the last 10 years and how YOU should also spend some time getting to know these practices…. Well..No.. Not exactly.
Those of you familiar with Landmark Education will know the phrase “Loving the Gap”. This gap refers to the space that sometimes occurs between where you are in your life and where you would like to be. For me, yoga and meditation are on the other side of the gap. Across the abyss, really. Even though I have tried countless times, I can’t seem to get past 5 minutes of doing either. It’s uncomfortable, my body parts go numb, I can’t clear my mind….. enough said.
In my head, I know that the way to get to where I want to be is to love the gap. Take time to look at what is between myself and where I want to be, wrestle with it, acknowledge it, and take steps to move forward. The problem is that I don’t always slow down enough to look. I am more comfortable being in control…. yoga and meditation are uncomfortable, challenging and a bit painful.
Two recent events have caused a forced pause in my life… bouts with vertigo and a job loss due to budget cuts. At first, I didn’t welcome either… they are uncomfortable, challenging and painful. I felt out of control and couldn’t see the other side of the gap… I couldn’t see where I wanted to go. Lucky for me I started slowing down and just being with myself. Well, did I really have much of a choice? Ha. I went for long walks with our amazing golden retriever and spent time thinking, just thinking about everything. Something started to change when Brenda and I began seeing the possibilities – we started talking about what we wanted to create in this life… what we really wanted to be a part of regardless of current obligations or situations.
Then one day Brenda just said it. “Why don’t we travel.” Brenda’s ideas are always spot on but this was perfect timing. Her job in IT allows for mobility and I am rather free at the moment. 🙂
We had already discussed getting an Airstream and trying for a eco/sustainable remodel. We both came from outdoor/experiential education jobs so traveling around and becoming a mobile green education RV made perfect sense. Passion and love unite. Green RV Life… on the green road was born. Welcome to this journey.
What about yoga and meditation? Well, let’s just say I am taking it slowly. I did some stretching today and 10 minutes of meditation. The abyss is now just a gap.
