Sustainable and beautiful – our new Kirei desk

Kirei work desk

Brenda and I built this work desk that replaced the dinette we removed.  A lovely RVing couple came to get the dinette and are using it.  We started with a sheet of 1 inch Kirei board (made from sustainable reclaimed sorghum straw and no formaldehyde) attached to FSC certified 1/2 inch plywood and cut it to size.  It has a rounded corner and was sealed with a low VOC sealer.  The edge is wrapped with aluminum face nosing and the legs are galvanized metal pipe.  For extra support, we used an aluminum L bracket that screwed into the desk and the wall (from underneath). We love it!

Weight: The dinette weighed 80 pounds.  This desk weighs 25 pounds.  The Ikea swivel chair weighs 18 pounds.

Galvanized metal pipe used for legs – screwed into the cork flooring.  Face nosing from Eagle Mouldings.

12 volt LED TV used as computer monitor and for streaming Netflix/Hulu

  1. OMG !!! You gals ROCK!! I love this and I love being able to follow your progress! GO GREEN or GO HOME! LOL! Have fun let’s hookup when you get back!

    • Hi Barbara – great to hear from you. We love this desk – nice and simple and does exactly what we need with no frills. BTW we have received sooo many compliments about your photos. They really stand out and are awesome! Thanks again. We will be back in January and would love to see you and Wayne then.

  2. This table is awesome! Where did you purchase the metal face nosing?

    • Hi AJ –

Thank you, thank you, thank you. We found a company online that sold the exact type of trim (face nosing) we were looking for. No one locally had it. They are Eagle Mouldings. We also learned that trim like this actually has a name – face nosing. Ha, who knew:)

  3. Our friend bought their trailer because they wanted their dogs with them while traveling as hotels were largely not pet-friendly in those days (mid-60 s). My partner and I have been thinking of buying/restoring a vintage Airstream, maybe a teardrop so reading here about your renovation is great!
